Participants from Ugandan and Kenyan Universities congregated at Muni University for a three-day workshop on Strengthening Gender equity in Higher Education Institutions (HEI) in East Africa.
The workshop that took place on Wednesday 14th August to Friday 16th August 2019 at Muni University Council Hallwas geared towards initiating an innovative ICT-driven gender awareness creation network in selected Higher Education Institutions to enable the promotion of Women’s     participation in leadership,and building capacity for gender mainstreaming and prevention of sexual harassment in HEIs in East Africa.

The Dean of Students Madam Amandru Stella Wawa welcomed the participants to the workshop which she said, is the first of its kind in the East African Region being championed by Muni University. She appreciated the participants who especially came from very far and wide.

The Vice Chancellor of Muni University Professor Christine Dranzoa, appreciated the Team that organised the training and said the purpose for allthe participants of the workshop is to do introspection and ask how we can as players in the higher institutions trigger transformative policies that address the issue of equity.

She commended the use of ICT to drive and eliminate the Gender Disparity and use of resources to promote gender equity. She urged the Human Resource to recruit a Gender Specialist in order to continue with the drive.
Key issues discussed include;

  1. Gender and Development Concepts,Sexual harassment and Gender Based Violence
  2. Women’sLeadership and over all governance in HEI
  3. ICT driven Gender equity and anti-sexual harassment strategies
  4. Stakeholders’ perspectives on integrating ICT in to GBV and leadership among others.

The Key Note Speaker was Dr.Mercy Mirembe Ntangaare an Associate Professor of Drama, Makerere University, Kampala. Director, MEBO Theatre. Chairperson, FEMRITE. General Secretary, AUGA (Association of Uganda-German Alumni). Board Member, Fourth Heritage Initiative. Member, UWEAL (Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association).
 
Other Speakers included Dr.OkiriaEdith, a Gender Specialist at the  School of Women and Gender Studies in Makerere University, Dr.Andogah Geoffrey, Dean Faculty of Techno Science of Muni University,Mr. Abdul Wahid  Ijosiga Senior Human Resource Manager at Muni University
