Agriculture employs most of Uganda’s workforce and accounts for about a quarter of its GDP, yet productivity remains low and food insecurity affects over 40% of the population each year. The West Nile region also faces climate change, forest and wetland degradation, poor waste management and the loss of biodiversity. The Faculty of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences was established in 2020 to build the human and scientific capacity to meet these challenges at local, national and regional levels.
The faculty has three departments — Crop Science, Animal Science, and Environment and Natural Resources — and two degrees: the four-year BSc Agriculture and the three-year BSc Environment and Natural Resources. Both are practical: in 2024/2025, 143 students completed ten weeks of recess training and 40 were placed in industrial training. Its research uses biotechnology, bioinformatics and genomics to improve food and nutrition security, incomes and the environment.
