Muni Holds Media Briefing Ahead of Historic Groundbreaking of Its World-Class Teaching and Research Hospital as President Museveni Set to Attend as Chief Guest on Friday, 21 August 2026, at the Main Campus in Arua City.

Muni University, Arua City, is set to enter a new era of medical education, specialised healthcare and scientific research as it prepares to break ground for a state-of-the-art Teaching and Research Hospital on Friday, 21 August 2026, with H.E. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, expected to grace the landmark ceremony as Chief Guest.
The highly anticipated project is being positioned as one of the most transformative developments in the history of Muni University, with the facility expected to strengthen medical training, expand specialised healthcare, promote research and innovation, and create new opportunities for communities in West Nile and Uganda at large.
Ahead of the historic groundbreaking, Muni University on Wednesday, 19 August 2026, hosted a high-level media briefing at the University Conference Hall, giving the media an insight into the University's vision, the scale of the hospital project and preparations for the President's visit.
The briefing brought together the University leadership, hospital groundbreaking committee and members of the media as Muni University showcased a project that is set to significantly elevate its role in Uganda's health and education sector.

Muni University’s Journey to a World-Class Teaching Hospital

Speaking at the media briefing, Assoc. Prof. Simon Anguma Katrini, Vice Chancellor of Muni University, described the hospital as one of the University's most significant milestones.
Assoc. Prof. Anguma highlighted the remarkable growth of Muni University, noting that the institution has expanded from just two academic programmes to 34 programmes, while strengthening its strategic focus on Science, ICT, Engineering and Health Sciences.

He explained that the Teaching and Research Hospital is central to Muni University's ambition to expand advanced health training, particularly with plans to introduce programmes such as the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Pharmacy.
According to the Vice Chancellor, training doctors and other specialised health professionals requires modern infrastructure and a strong clinical environment where students can translate classroom knowledge into practical skills.
“This is going to be a state-of-the-art teaching hospital. As Vice Chancellor, I can confidently say this hospital will have no match in Uganda. This is our vision,” Assoc. Prof. Anguma said.
The hospital will therefore not only expand Muni University's academic portfolio but also strengthen its capacity to produce highly skilled professionals capable of responding to Uganda's changing healthcare needs.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Picho Leads Preparations for Historic Ceremony

Taking a central role in the preparations is Rev. Fr. Prof. Odubuker Picho Epiphany, Deputy Vice Chancellor, Finance and Administration and Chairman of the
Muni University Teaching and Research Hospital Groundbreaking Committee.
As Chairman of the Groundbreaking Committee, Rev. Fr. Prof. Picho provides overall leadership and coordination for the preparations, overseeing the various subcommittees established to ensure the success of the landmark ceremony.
The subcommittees include teams responsible for construction, publicity, welfare, protocol and other critical areas, working under the overall coordination of the Groundbreaking Committee.
The University has already held its sixth preparation meeting, underscoring the seriousness and level of coordination being invested in preparations for the President's visit.

Addressing the media, Rev. Fr. Prof. Picho explained that the facility is being established as a true Teaching and Research Hospital, with a mandate that goes beyond ordinary patient care.
He explained that an ordinary hospital primarily treats patients, while a teaching and research hospital combines patient care, training of future healthcare professionals, research and innovation.
The facility will therefore provide healthcare while simultaneously training future doctors, nurses, pharmacists, laboratory scientists and other health professionals.

Rev. Fr. Prof. Picho emphasised that research will be central to the hospital's mission because improved healthcare requires continuous investigation into diseases, treatment approaches and emerging health challenges.
He further noted that the immediate beneficiaries will include Muni University students, researchers and the wider community, reinforcing the University's identity as a community-focused institution.
The hospital is also expected to create direct and indirect employment opportunities, with recruited staff expected to operate under the normal public service arrangements.

A 400-Bed Hospital Built for Advanced Healthcare

The planned 400-bed Muni University Teaching and Research Hospital has been designed to provide a broad range of modern healthcare, teaching and research services.
Among the planned facilities are biomedical laboratories, lecture theatres, multiple operating theatres, an organ transplant theatre, a dedicated women's theatre, VIP clinics, outpatient departments, a fully equipped radiology unit, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Main Intensive Care Unit, dialysis unit, fertility centre with sperm bank, dentistry section, occupational therapy unit and specialised laboratories.
The hospital will also feature general wards, women's wards, administration offices, a VIP wing with two Presidential suites, laundry facilities, kitchen and restaurant areas, storage facilities and solar power installations.
The University's vision includes establishing a major fertility centre, while creating capacity for highly specialised services, including future organ transplantation.
This extensive range of facilities is expected to position the hospital as a major centre for medical training, specialised healthcare, research and innovation.

Government Support Behind the Landmark Project

Muni University leadership has expressed appreciation to the Government of Uganda and President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for supporting the development of the hospital.
According to the University, Government has already committed substantial resources to the project, with UGX 20 billion committed to the Muni University vote account.
The University also indicated that Government directed the construction of the project through Roko Construction Company Limited, an arrangement expected to facilitate faster implementation and minimise delays associated with conventional procurement processes.
The project is expected to take approximately two and a half years, including construction, procurement and installation of specialised equipment.
Muni University Building Strong Health Research Partnerships
Beyond infrastructure, the hospital is expected to become a platform for strategic partnerships in healthcare, research and innovation.
Assoc. Prof. Anguma revealed that major health and research institutions, including the Uganda Cancer Institute and UVRI, are engaging with Muni University on possible areas of collaboration.

These partnerships are expected to enhance knowledge exchange, medical research, specialised healthcare and innovation, further strengthening Muni University's position within Uganda's health and scientific ecosystem.

Training Uganda’s Next Generation of Health Professionals

The hospital will provide Muni University with a modern clinical environment for training future healthcare professionals.
Assoc. Prof. Anguma said the University is looking at developing capacity to train specialists in areas including dermatology, urology and other specialised medical fields.
Students will have opportunities to learn in an environment where theory, clinical practice, research and innovation are brought together.
This will strengthen Muni University's academic mandate while contributing to Uganda's efforts to develop the human resources required to deliver quality healthcare.

A Hospital for West Nile and Uganda

The significance of the project extends far beyond the boundaries of Muni University and Arua City.
The hospital is expected to serve communities across West Nile and beyond, while contributing to Uganda's broader healthcare development agenda.
Prof. Jacob Agea ,Deputy Vice Chacellor Academic Affiars explained that Arua Regional Referral Hospital remains a major referral facility for the region, while the Muni University Teaching and Research Hospital will have a distinct focus on teaching and research, creating opportunities for collaboration and referrals between the two institutions.
The development is therefore expected to strengthen the region's healthcare ecosystem rather than replace existing health facilities.

President Museveni to Grace the Historic Groundbreaking

All roads lead to Muni University on Friday, 21 August 2026, as the institution prepares to host the groundbreaking ceremony for the landmark project.
The ceremony is expected to attract senior Government officials, leaders from the health and education sectors, technical heads of Government institutions, district officials, heads of hospitals across West Nile and other key stakeholders.
For Muni University, the occasion represents much more than the beginning of construction.
It is the beginning of a new chapter in the University's journey towards becoming a leading institution for medical education, specialised healthcare, scientific research and innovation.

From two academic programmes to 34 programmes, Muni University continues to demonstrate an ambitious trajectory of growth and transformation.
With the Teaching and Research Hospital, the University is now taking an even bigger step towards building an institution capable of producing highly skilled health professionals, advancing research, supporting innovation and delivering specialised healthcare.

As President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni prepares to grace the groundbreaking ceremony, Muni University is positioning itself at the forefront of Uganda's next generation of medical education, healthcare and scientific research.
