President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, represented by Vice President Jessica Alupo, presided over the ceremony at the main campus on 21 August 2026. Government has committed to fund the construction and the equipment.
Muni University has opened a new chapter in healthcare and higher education in West Nile, breaking ground for its Teaching and Research Hospital — a facility that will combine health service delivery, training, research and innovation, and bring specialised care closer to the people of the region and beyond.
The ceremony on Friday, 21 August 2026 brought together senior Government officials, university leaders, Members of Parliament, local and cultural leaders, academics and the community. Construction will be undertaken by Roko Construction Company Limited.
In the President’s speech, delivered by the Vice President, President Museveni congratulated the University, recognised its Refugee and Host Community Youth Empowerment Initiative and its AHEFT Prize, and reiterated Government’s commitment to finance the construction and equipment of the hospital — reducing the need for Ugandans to travel abroad for specialised treatment. He encouraged parents in West Nile to send their children to Muni and urged young people to take up science and technology programmes.
Muni University is a Government investment and a lasting gift to the people of West Nile. What we are witnessing today is evidence of how this institution has grown.
The Vice President paid tribute to the University’s founding Vice Chancellor, the late Prof. Christine Dranzoa, and to the leaders who worked to establish a public university in West Nile. She pledged to support the University’s request for more academic staff, and outlined Government plans for the Nebbi–Arua and Goli–Zombo–Vurra roads, which will make the hospital and the University easier to reach.
