On 19 August 2026, University leaders briefed the media at the University Conference Hall ahead of the groundbreaking on 21 August.

The Vice Chancellor, Assoc. Rev. Fr. Prof. Odubuker Picho Epiphany, who chaired the Groundbreaking Committee, stressed that research will be central to the hospital’s work.

What is planned

  • 400 beds, as described at the briefing
  • Biomedical and specialised laboratories, and lecture theatres
  • Operating theatres, including organ transplant and women’s theatres
  • Outpatient departments, radiology, neonatal and main intensive care, and dialysis

The University said Government has committed UGX 20 billion to its vote account, and that the work will take about two and a half years, including procurement and installing equipment. Prof. Jacob Agea said Arua Regional Referral Hospital stays the region’s main referral facility, with the new hospital focused on teaching and research.
